SERMON DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

.Read Philippians 4:1. When Paul was writing this, he was writing from prison. How is it that he is able to encourage others to “stand firm?” After reading this passage, what do you think was a driving force of his joy?
.Read Hebrews 12:1b-2 & Philippians 4:4. After reading this passage, self-reflect. How often have you been able to find joy in the midst of great personal suffering? Why was Jesus himself able to find joy, knowing He was going to endure great personal pain? How can we discipline ourselves to find joy in the middle of our battles? Discuss this as a group.
.Read 2 Corinthians 6:10. This passage lists several contrasts that could be seen as contradictions for those who have not learned how to overcome hardship. How exactly is it possible to see those negative situations or hardships as blessings? How does God turn hardships into opportunities in your life? List one or two and discuss as a group.
.Read Philippians 4:6-7. In an age where anxiety seems to run rampant and it’s now “socially acceptable” to have anxiety disorders, how can we discipline ourselves not to allow anxiety to rule our thoughts and our minds? What are some things that cause you to worry? Discuss ways to overcome those worries.
.Read Luke 12:22-25 & Philippians 4:10-12. Although God takes good care of us and this passage tells us there’s really no point to worrying, we continue to do so. What practical things can we do in order to discipline our minds not to worry. Discuss.
.Read Philippians 4:7-9. What goes inside of our minds must come out. How can we dwell on the things that the Lord wants us to mediate and practice, when we fill our minds with things that perpetuate anxiety? What practices can we add to our daily lives that help to fill our minds with things that will bring joy?
.Read Philippians 4:15-23. It’s important to offer Thanksgiving for the things that the Lord has blessed us with, especially when we are walking through adversity. Paul gives thanks and begins to recognize all the things he is grateful for in the midst of a prison stay. End your time with Thanksgiving for the things that you have been blessed with.
